Eligible Roles

Class/Programme/School Reps

Class Reps play an important role in the quality assurance and enhancement roles within the University. A class/programme/school rep acts as a spokesperson for their course colleagues, providing feedback on any issues regarding the learning experience. Caledonian Student Parliament Reps

Student Parliament Reps get elected to sit on Caledonian Student Parliament which is the ultimate decision-making committee of the Students’ Association. Student Parliament reps make decisions about student campaigns, GCUSA policies and directing your student representatives. It meets six times a year - three times each semester. Sports Committee Member

Each Sports Club has a committee who are responsible for ensuring the club runs smoothly. Within each club, the role of committee member can differ. For example, a Sport Club Team Captain oversees the running of a competitive team within a sports club, they plan and co-ordinate team selections for fixtures and are the captain of the team during matches. Society Committee Member

Each Society has a committee who organise activities for students to participate in. Societies can be created from any special interest you have i.e. hobbies, religious beliefs, political views, or a social group of students from your class or course. Editorial Team

The Re:Union magazine comprises of students’ contributions of articles, photographs, cartoons, poems etc. The editorial team have the hard task of deciding on the pieces to be featured in the magazine. The editorial team consists of a number of different editors, each has a specialised area. Visit the Re:Union Magazine webpage for more information.

Radio Committee Member radio

Radio Caley is created by students for students, featuring music, news and topical features. The committee organise the schedule of programs, promote the station, fundraise and ensure the station is interesting and fun for all the listeners. For more information go to www.radiocaley.com

Nightline Volunteers

Nightline is a telephone support service for the students of Caledonian and Strathclyde Universities. Volunteers are ordinary students who feel they can help others by providing a listening ear for any problems. It is a worthwhile role, as students are part of an organisation helping others, it is never boring and it has a great social support aspect. To find out more, visit Nightline.

Welfare Volunteers

Volunteers get involved with promoting a number of different student campaigns ranging from Alcohol Awareness to SHAG week. More information about this role can be found on the Welfare Volunteering webpage. shagweek-2008

Student Mentor

Mentors are existing Caledonian students who can share their knowledge and experience with new students. Mentors help the move to University seem a little less scary by providing support, practical advice and re-assurance. Student mentoring is a paid role. Psychology Voluntary Work and Mentoring Scheme

This role involves students taking part in a person-centred or caring capacity such as befriending, mentoring, working in a school, support group or helpline. Students will gain transferable skills and work-related skills as well as forging links within the community. Visit Voluntary Work and Mentoring Scheme webpage for more information.

Routes for All Mentors

This is an intiative to inform and guide S5 and S6 pupils as they prepare to leave school to study at college. Mentors have the opportunity to earn money in a flexible part-time job that looks great on the CV, work alongside students from other institutions and backgrounds and make a positive difference to the lives of young people from schools across Glasgow. Peer Assisted Supported Study (PASS) Leaders

Trained PASS Leaders facilitate small group sessions with first years on the same programme of study. Leaders hold weekly sessions which aim to help students settle in to University life, review their academic course content, develop the skills needed to study at university and better prepare for assessments and exams. On Track Tutor/Mentor

On Track is a project designed to help students make the transition from college to university. Volunteers of On Track are students who act as tutors and mentors, taking part in a skills programme which is delivered to college students. For more information, go to the On Track Project website.

The Caledonian Club

The Caledonian Club is an educationally based project with a long-term vision to facilitate true social change in the communities Glasgow Caledonian University serves. Students will work with young people, from nursery age through all school stages and their families. Working as a Caledonian Club Student offers the opportunity to earn money in a part-tme job. In addtion, students will fulfill a role as an active citizen and develp skills to improve future employment prospects. International Student E-Buddy Scheme

As a buddy, you e-mail incoming buddy students at the beginning of the semester to introduce yourself and then at certain times throughout the semester. Your role is to pass on your knowledge of Glasgow and university life, along with the academic aspects of studying. Most of the contact is made via e-mail, there are opportunities to contact your buddies more regularly or to even meet up for a coffee. International Student Support Services (ISSS) Volunteer

International Student Support Services volunteers assist the ISSS department with a variety of campaigns throughout the year, aimed at helping International students settle in to university life. To find out more about this role, contact Frances McNally at frances.mcnally@gcal.ac.uk

International Student Support Service Volunteer

ISSS have a range of services to support International Students through University. The department organise events, facilities and services where International student volunteers are needed. Your role would depend on the activity but can range from offering a point of contact for International students to encouraging them to take part in the International Student Barometer.
