Development Logs
To help reflect, the Student Leaders Programme uses a reflective model developed by Barton (1970). The model starts with a descriptive level of reflection, called the “what”. An example is: What happened? How did you participate? What did you say/do? What was my role? Then we move to “So what?” This concentrates on the theory and knowledge building level of reflection: So, what does this tell or teach me about myself and about leadership? What did I base my action on and what was going through my mind as I acted upon them? What could I have done differently? What is my new understanding of this situation? This final stage is “Now what”, that looks at what we can now do to break the cycle and improve in the future.

Below is an example of a Bronze Level Development Log for a Class Rep.
| Key Dates | What meeting/training/activity did you attend? | How did you participate? What did you do/say? | What did you learn from this? | How will this learning affect future meetings or activities related to your role? | Evidence of participation |

Class Rep Training (Introductory Level) |
It was a taught training sessions with some group discussion which I participated in. | I was prepared for my role as class rep and learned of the responsibilities and techniques which would be needed including training on how torepresent people, negotiations and participating in meetings. | I feel more confident about attending University meetings as I have some knowledge about what to expect. | Attendance Record/Staff signature |
| 08/11/08 | Public Speaking (Personal Development Seminar) | I participated in the seminar activites which included an improvised speech in front of the group. | I learned that my public speaking skills need more work, but also gained some tips on how to better prepare for and deliver speeches and presentations. | I will be able to use the advice given to better speak up in classes, University meetings or at Caledonian Student Parliament to ensure I am being a thorough representative. | Attendance Record |
| 03/02/09 | Student/Staff Consultative Group Meeting | I discussed recent problems and successes as indicated to me by my classmates. I also had to gather feedback from classmates on their collective issues relating to our course prior to the meeting. | I learned that the University are responsive to student feedback, but not all problems raised could be dealt with easily. One problem I raised was already in the process of being resolved. | I will ensure that I do research more thoroughly and offer suggestions from students to resolving problems rather than taking complaints alone. | Minutes of meeting |
