Friday 27th April saw over 100 students pack into the Students' Association at our Nigerian Students' Society's annual speaker event. Students' came from as far as Dundee University as well as from Strathclyde to join GCU students in hearing Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau speak on the theme of ‘Societal reorientation and the way forward’.
The Society presented Shekarau with an award and certificate and Shekarau presented certificates on behalf of the Society for the 2011-2012 Committee. Afterwards, students had a chance to ask questions before moving to informal discussions whilst enjoying traditional Nigerian food arranged by the Society for this free event.
Nigerian Students' Society President, Suleiman Hussein, said that the Society are extremely pleased with the success of the event and has had positive feedback from Shekarau himself as well as their members.
Ibrahim Shekarau was elected Governor of Kano State in Nigeria April 2003, and reelected in April 2007. He is a member of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) and was one of the leading candidates aspiring to become president in the Nigerian General elections of 2011. As Governor, Shekarau hosted some world leaders including the former German President Schroeder and Charles, the Prince of Wales. (Wikipedia).
